Cosmetology Apprenticeship Theory Classes

Cosmetology Apprenticeship Theory Classes

I have often wondered why the knowledge requirements for a professional Cosmetologist are so strict. The health and safety requirements for cosmetology are as strict as in the medical professions. The California Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) mission is to 'Protect the Consumer'. Through the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology the DCA places a strong emphasis on Health & Safety in how they regulate the salons and cosmetologists.

The knowledge required for professional cosmetology is the 'What', the 'Why', and the 'How', of the various service procedures performed by the cosmetologist. The Cosmetology Apprenticeship requires the apprentice to do 220 hours of Required Supplemental Instruction (RSI) and 3200 hours of On-the-Job-Training (OJT). The RSI gives the apprentice the 'What' and the 'Why' of the various service procedures. The OJT teaches the apprentice the 'How' of the service procedures.

Beauology offers the Required Supplemental Instruction in the form of several Theory Classes. The entire curriculum of Cosmetology is divided into 37 Theory Classes. Each class is of six hours in duration excluding the thirty minute lunch break. The classes are held in-person at our salon on Tuesdays from 10:30 AM to 5 PM. At the time of this writing each class costs $234.

Given our 'pay as you go' approach we do not collect any lump sum advance payments for the Cosmetology Apprenticeship program. At the start of each theory class the apprentice is required to pay for that day's class. The class fee can be paid out the apprentice's earnings from the OJT hours without creating a financial burden for the apprentice.
